Position Summary: The Archivist is responsible for the acquisition, maintenance and coordination of the archival and library collections and the Records and Information Management Program at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

Basic Function and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Accession, arrange, describe, preserve and catalog archival collections

  • Advise on and implement new records management policies and classification systems

  • Facilitate the development of filing systems and maintain those systems to meet department requirements

  • Maintain electronic and manual records inventories including the changeover from paper to electronic management systems where necessary

  • Preserve museum memory and heritage by developing policies, procedures, and plans to collect materials for the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History Institutional Archives

  • Assist Collections staff in developing policy and procedures for maintaining collections records and integrating those records into an electronic management system

  • Enable appropriate access to information by researchers, staff, etc. and respond to internal/external information inquiries

  • Digitize archival collections and maintain appropriate metadata

  • Develop and manage the archives budget

  • Make recommendations for deaccessioning of library books and archival materials

  • Respond to and fill requests for rights and reproduction requests of archival material

  • Research information for use in exhibits and obtain reproduction rights when necessary

  • Catalog library books using Rediscovery Proficio software and MARC standards

  • Write monthly report with archives and library activities and statistics

  • Train and supervise interns and volunteers


  • Extensive experience in archives and records management

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited  institution with certificate in Archives and Records Administration

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and computer skills

  • Understanding of nationally accepted standards, tools, and best practices for archival processing and description, including Describing Archives: a Content Standard (DACS)

  • Experience and familiarity with archives and library databases (PastPerfect5 and Proficio experience desired.

  • Team-oriented perspective and a philosophy that honors the viewpoints and skills of others.
