Part-Time Employment

SUMMARY: Keep premises of the museum and building in clean and orderly condition by performing the following duties. Candidates should be available to work a flexible varied schedule as needed for events. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Basic Function and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Cleans and polishes lighting fixtures, various surfaces, and trim, to include marble, brass stainless steel glass, plastic, etc.

  • Cleans rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, exhibit galleries, exterior of exhibit cases, balconies, entrances and exits, storage rooms and other work areas.

  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floor.

  • Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies.

  • Dusts furniture and equipment. Polishes metalwork.

  • Washes walls, ceiling, and woodwork. Washes windows, door panels, and sills.

  • Empties wastebaskets, recyclable containers, and empties and cleans ashtrays.

  • Transports trash and waste to disposal area.

  • Replenishes bathroom supplies.

  • Keeps all tools and assigned equipment clean and in good working condition and properly stored after each use.

  • Delivers messages. Transports small equipment or tools between departments. Sets up tables and chairs in auditorium or exhibit galleries.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or two to five years related experience and/or training, in a similar institution such as a school, hospital, or nursing home; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees of the organization.

  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract three digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
