Museum School Class Assistant

Museum School is seeking applicants to assist in the school-age class program. Museum School’s discovery approach offers a unique opportunity for children to learn in a creative, informal classroom environment,

using age-appropriate interpretation and hands-on interaction and opportunities. The interdisciplinary curriculum combines science and history with creative activities. Museum School classes are offered on various Saturdays during the fall and spring and several four-day sessions in the summer.


The ideal Museum School Class Assistant is a mature, enthusiastic high school or college student, at least 16 years old, who enjoys assisting adults and working around children. All assistant positions are part-time, and hours  are variable according to when classes are offered. Assistants must be able to work two - four

designated Saturdays each fall and spring session and at least two 4-day summer sessions. This position is within the Museum’s Education Department and reports to the Director of Youth and Family Programs.


Basic Functions and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • following directions from the supervisor as well as the classroom teacher


  • preparing materials before class for the day’s projects and activities


  • paying close attention to the teacher and be ready to assist where needed


  • remaining in the background in a assisting role


  • putting away supplies, cleaning materials and straightening the classroom after class


  • helping staff with other tasks when asked



  • enthusiastic and enjoys working around children, previous experience with children a plus


  • motivated, self-starter that looks for tasks that can be completed without being told


  • willingness to complete messy clean-up tasks such as washing brushes, wiping tables, etc.


  • eagerness to help out in many types of situations


  • has great attitude, and is reliable, punctual and dependable
