Assistant Fabricator

Temporary Position – Through 11/20/09
M-F 8:00am – 4:00pm | Hourly

Basic Function and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

Under the direction of the Fabrication Manager, the Assistant Fabricator will set up and operate a variety of woodworking machines and use various hand tools to fabricate and repair wooden cabinets and furniture. Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints of articles to prepare articles for finishing.  May dip, brush, or spray assembled articles with protective or decorative materials, such as stain, varnish, or paint. May install hardware, such as hinges, catches, and drawer pulls. 

The Assistant Fabricator will also work with Collections to assist packing, shelving and moving artifacts and exhibit mannequins. May crate large and heavy artifacts, assist with setting up mannequins for moving them to the exhibitions.  During exhibit installation, may support artifact and mannequin installations. 

Qualifications:

  • Basic building and finishing knowledge: knowledge of methods involved in the construction and repair of exhibition cabinets and furniture.
  • Ability to work as a team member and to maintain a positive attitude
  • Able to work independently, with limited supervision
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
