Museum School Summer Programs

For seventy-four years Museum School has introduced children to the wonders of the world around them. Founded in 1949, the program was first called the “Frisky and Blossom Club.” Today, Museum School continues to be a national model for informal science education.

The program’s intimate classroom surroundings foster a love for learning . . . from the wondrous science specimens and historical artifacts in the Museum’s large teaching collections to the early-childhood master teachers who brilliantly connect children’s imaginations to nature in their own backyard and times long ago. Young children are encouraged to discover and dream of one day becoming astronauts, engineers, historians, paleontologists and so much more through their encounters with real objects and real stories.

Museum School prides itself on its developmentally-appropriate, experiential, engaging learning environments. We are looking forward to continuing the Museum School legacy experienced by generations of children. We know that this will be another summer of excellence and we hope your child will join us at Museum School!

Curriculum

Children must turn 4 or 5 years old by September 1, 2024.

Stomp, Chomp, & Roar, Dinosaur (Age 4) - As budding paleontologists, four-year-old children are introduced to a different type of dinosaur each day to learn about their differences and similarities. They will compare dinosaur characteristics, such as their size, how they protected themselves, what they ate, and which dinosaurs were bipedal or quadrupedal.

Rambling River (Age 4) - The unique habitat of the Trinity River is alive with animal and plant life. Exploring this unique habitat will help children learn about the various creatures that live there. The four-year-old children explore busy beavers, wood ducks nesting in tree cavities, crayfish digging in shallow waters and snails working in the ground.

3,2,1… Blast Off! (Age 4) - Our solar neighborhood is an exciting place featuring planets, the sun and moon, stars and many other celestial objects. Four-year-old children explore planet Earth, take a pretend trip to the moon, discover the wonders of the sun and spend time star gazing.

Seaside Explorers (Age 4) - Four-year-old children will learn about the wonderful sea life of the Texas Gulf Coast. They will discover the unique features of gulls, hermit crabs, sea turtles and the flounder.

I Dig Dinos (Age 5) - Five-year-old children compare and contrast several different dinosaurs – from largest to smallest and plant eaters to meat eaters. They learn how dinosaurs protected themselves with armor or spikes. They will discuss possible extinction theories and how paleontologists help us know more about the days when dinosaurs roamed the land.

Around the Trinity River (Age 5) - The unique habitat of the Trinity River is alive with animal and plant life. Exploring this unique habitat will help children learn about the various creatures that live there. Five-year-old children encounter salamanders, catfish, mallard ducks, opossums and other creatures that depend on the winding river for food and shelter.

To the Moon and Beyond (Age 5) - Our solar neighborhood is an exciting place featuring planets, the sun and moon, stars and many other celestial objects. Five-year-old children find out about life as an astronaut – blasting off from our home planet, headed to the moon’s surface. The unique planets of the solar system will be introduced as well as starry constellations.

Ocean Quest (Age 5) - Five-year-old children will investigate the seashore and its strange animals such as sand dollars, sea stars and crabs. They will discover the special adaptations that allow sharks and whales to live in the deep.
