OPEN YOUR EYES TO DREAMTIME
Innovation Studios is no place for the ordinary. A place to experiment. To create. And even to bend the rules. Let your spirit and imagination soar and who knows what you’ll become?
We knew that Innovation Studios Gallery should send a bright signal, as a statement and foretelling of what this experimental new space for learning should be all about. And what better way to express that than DreamTime, an illuminated monument of items discarded, created specifically for the space by sculptor Warren Muller of bahdeebahdu.
Broken bicycles, old busted chains
Rusted handle bars, out in the rain.
Somebody must have an orphanage for
All these things that nobody wants anymore…
- Tom Waits
One day not long ago, Muller noticed an old broken tricycle, a cherished item of someone’s childhood memory of the past, but now just a common item thrown away in a trash bin. “I wonder what I could do with that,” thought Muller. Most of us wouldn’t have given that junky old relic a second thought.
Muller’s sense of wonder is always working incessantly. He is always on the lookout for objects most would consider abandoned and useless that he can transform into something glorious and zany. DreamTime is a great example. The sculpture is more than 40 feet long, 8 feet wide in some places, weighs nearly half a ton, and includes tricycles, rusted metal lawn furniture, old metal toys, chandeliers and even the grille of a jeep. “There is a lot of history in this piece,” Muller explained, “as well as technology.” DreamTime incorporates clear and multi-colored incandescent lighting, fiberoptics that slowly change color, and neon.
Muller’s imagination is boundless. He takes what most see as junk and finds its hidden potential, puts it into a new context no one had ever considered, and gives it a brand new identity. Artists make it possible for us to reconsider the ordinary, and to go places in our minds that we’ve never been before. Let DreamTime open your eyes, your mind, and your spirit to experience and create your own new world of discovery today.
