Explore chemistry through hands-on explorations during National Chemistry Week
During Chemistry Connections 2019, guests will explore the marvelous metals found in the periodic table through hands-on explorations with the metallic substances and classic chemistry experiments that deepen guests’ understanding of the periodic table and chemistry as-a-whole.
Some of the experiences planned for this hands-on, action-packed festival include:
- Build a battery to learn the chemistry behind portable sources of power.
- Test the conductivity of different elements and liquids with DIY conductivity testers
- Investigate different redox reactions on the surface of metals
- Watch dull pennies change right before your eyes and examine coins from around the world
- Iron, Iron, everywhere-even in our breakfast cereal? We’ll search for this element in the foods we eat
- Not only are metals marvelous, some are magnetic! Experiment with this property of many metals
- Don’t miss a special Homeschool Afternoon from 1:30 – 4:00 PM on Thursday, October 24 and a Family Day from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 26.
Nearly 200 student chemist volunteers from schools across North Texas will be on hand for the event. Volunteers from Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, Texas Woman’s University, University of Dallas, University of North Texas, University of North Texas-Health Science Center, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas, Collin College, Tarrant County College-Northwest Campus, Birdville High School, Fort Worth Country Day, Hebron High School, Southwest Christian School and Trinity Valley School will lead activities with Museum guests.
Chemistry Connections hours are 10 AM – 2 PM on October 22 – 25 and 10 AM – 4 PM on October 26.
